He captures themes and moments that might otherwise go unnoticed and unsung and shows how a seemingly ordinary experience can just as easily be described as truly extraordinary. There are three strong musical elements that have assembled to create Aaron’s unique style and sound. Firstly, he was drawn as a child to the world of the emotional songwriters like Cat Stevens, Tracy Chapman, David Wilcox, Rickie Lee Jones, John Hiatt and John Prine. These were all artists that allowed themselves to communicate concepts through their music that would seldom be spoken out loud in a normal conversation, but were important feelings and opinions. It was intriguing to think that there was an entirely different level and type of communication that could only be accessed through a well written song. The second element in Aaron’s acoustic style came about during his college years at ASU in Boone, NC. There he was immersed in a playing style based in Old Time and Bluegrass that had all the energy of the guitar rock and heavy metal he was drawn to as a teenager, but with an undeniable finesse and grace. It seemed like the perfect balance between chaos and control. Here were the pickers that impressed a sense of acoustic tone in Aaron, like Doc Watson, Norman Blake, David Grier, and Tony Rice. The renewed energy of the Old Time and traditional acoustic scene in the mountains around the turn of the century was remarkable. At the time the Freight Hoppers were tearing it up around the region, Art Stamper had just released a recording of fiddle tunes, and the new acoustic styles and sounds pioneered by the likes of New Grass Revival and Tim O’Brien were becoming “mainstream” Americana and acoustic music. “Appalachian Waltz” with Mark O’Connor, Edgar Meyer, and Yo Yo Ma and “Uncommon Ritual” with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Mike Marshall opened up a whole new world for any traditional instrumentalist to aspire to. This was a time of opening doors in the world of acoustic music. At the same time it was the rise of the successful self promoted independent musician, the mp3, and the fall of the music industry as it had been defined for the past half century. The third and arguably the most important factor contributing to Aaron’s musical presentation is his ingrained tendency to do things his own way regardless of how others are doing it around him. He’ll take the best of what he sees and then add his own twist. It’s a sense of individuality that some would (and do) call stubbornness, but some would call personality or character. Aaron has taken what he has learned and continues to learn from songwriters and acoustic musicians from all walks and eras and integrated it into his own brand of meaningfully crafted acoustic folk. He has a percussive muted flat-picking style all his own that complements his earthy tenor vocals perfectly. It’s a little bit mountain, but it’s a little bit modern, too. Like so many performers before him, he’s taken the spirit and heart of the past and generated a fresh sound and voice. He has charmed audiences from the Carolinas to California, carrying his heartfelt acoustic tone all the way across the Atlantic to Ireland. A finalist in many songwriting competitions including the Hank Williams Songwriting Contest, the Mountain Stage Newsong competition, and the North Carolina Songwriter's Cooperative Song Contest, Aaron has also played alongside such acoustic visionaries as Acoustic Syndicate, The Avett Brothers, Doc Watson, Keller Williams, The Larry Keel Experience, and Old Crow Medicine Show, just to name a few. Aaron Burdett writes about hope, about relationships, and the intricate interactions we all go through every day.
